Solid Wood vs Engineered Wood Furniture: What's the Difference?

When you shop for furniture you'll see terms like solid wood, veneer, MDF and engineered wood — and they make a real difference to how a piece looks, lasts and is priced. Here's how to tell them apart and choose well.

Solid wood

Made entirely from natural timber, solid wood is strong, repairable and ages with character. It can be sanded and refinished, and it lasts for generations. It's the most expensive option and can expand and contract with humidity, but for pieces you want to keep, it's hard to beat.

Veneer over engineered core

A thin layer of real wood bonded to a stable engineered core gives the look of solid wood with less movement and a lower price. Quality veneered furniture is durable and beautiful — the key is a well-made core and a thick enough veneer.

Engineered wood (MDF, particleboard, plywood)

Engineered boards are made from wood fibres or layers bonded under pressure. Plywood is genuinely strong and used in good furniture; MDF and particleboard are more affordable and stable but can't be refinished and are less tolerant of moisture. They're fine for lighter-duty or budget pieces.

How to choose

For investment pieces — dining tables, dressers, beds — favour solid wood or quality veneer over a sturdy core. For lighter or short-term pieces, engineered wood offers good value. Whatever the material, check the joinery: dovetail or doweled joints signal care that matters more than the label alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is solid wood always better than engineered wood?
Solid wood lasts longest and can be refinished, but quality veneer over a stable core resists warping and costs less. The best choice depends on the piece and your budget.

Is veneer furniture good quality?
Yes — well-made veneer over a solid core is durable and used in many high-end pieces. Quality depends on the core material and veneer thickness, not the veneer itself.

Does engineered wood furniture last?
Plywood-based pieces can last many years; MDF and particleboard are stable and affordable but can't be refinished and dislike moisture, so they suit lighter-duty use.
