Start with the sofa and the floor plan
Measure the room before you fall for anything. Sketch the walls, mark the windows, doors, radiators, and outlets, then decide where people will actually walk. A standard three-seat sofa runs about 84 to 90 inches wide. In a smaller apartment, a 72-inch loveseat keeps the room breathing. Leave 30 to 36 inches of clear path around the main pieces so nobody has to turn sideways to reach the window.
Point the seating at whatever you want the room to be about. A television, a fireplace, a big window. If it's the TV, a comfortable viewing distance is roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal, so a 55-inch set wants somewhere around 7 to 11 feet of gap. How to furnish a living room around a rug
The rug is the second thing to buy, not the last. It sets the borders of the seating area and stops the furniture from looking like it's drifting. Too-small rugs are the most common mistake we see. For most living rooms an 8-by-10 or 9-by-12 does the job.
The simplest rule: get the front legs of every seat onto the rug. If the budget allows, float all four legs on it and leave an 18-to-24-inch border of bare floor around the edges. Layer lighting and the finishing pieces
Now the middle-sized things. A coffee table should sit about the height of your sofa cushions, give or take an inch, and stop roughly 14 to 18 inches from the seat so there's legroom and reach. Then light it in layers. One ceiling fixture on its own flattens a room and casts hard shadows. Aim for at least three sources at different heights: something overhead, a floor lamp reading over a chair, a table lamp for a warm pool of light in the evening. Leave the decorative stuff for last. Art, throws, a plant, a stack of books. Buy those slowly. A room that fills up over a few months almost always looks more like you than one bought in a single weekend cart.
